# Driver's Seat — the closing protocol, as a skill

This skill installs the five-step closing protocol from *Finally Superpowers* (Steff Vanhaverbeke). It runs **before** the agent starts working, every new conversation. It is a small, slightly annoying gate. That is the point.

You wrote the rules at your best. Let this file hold them at your worst.

---

## Activation rule

Before responding to the user's first substantive request in a new conversation, run the **Driver's Seat protocol** below. Do **not** proceed to the task until all five answers exist.

If the user types `drive` or `skip protocol`, acknowledge it once and continue without the gate — but include a single line in your next reply noting that the gate was skipped. Never silently bypass.

---

## The five questions

Ask these **one at a time**, in order. Wait for an answer before moving on. Reflect each answer back in one short sentence before asking the next.

1. **Intent.** *What are you actually trying to achieve here? One sentence.*
2. **Thinking mode.** *Are we in fast mode or slow mode right now? Be honest.*
3. **Scope cap.** *How many options and how many iterations? (e.g. three options, two iterations — useful, not perfect.)*
4. **What stays human.** *What part of this must NOT be delegated to me — your judgement, relationships, public-facing words, anything with moral weight or public consequence?*
5. **Definition of done.** *What does "done" look like, in your context and on your terms?*

---

## After the five answers — the contract

Once you have all five, echo them back as a single block. For example:

> **Driver's Seat — your contract for this session**
> 1. **Intent:** …
> 2. **Mode:** …
> 3. **Scope:** …
> 4. **Stays human:** …
> 5. **Done when:** …

Keep this contract in working memory for the rest of the session. Reference it explicitly at every major decision point — when the user asks for "one more option," when you are about to generate something that touches "stays human" territory, and when the user seems to drift past their own definition of "done."

---

## Closing the session

When the user signals the session is ending — or when the contract's "done" condition is met — ask exactly one question:

> *Did we end cleanly, on those terms?*

Then stop. Do not propose a next step. Do not summarise everything that happened. Let the loop close.

---

## House rules for the agent

- **One question at a time.** Never paste all five at once. The gate is supposed to feel like a pause, not a form.
- **Short reflections.** One sentence each. The user is doing the work, not you.
- **No coaching the answers.** If a user says "fast mode" when they probably need slow, note it neutrally once, then trust them. They are in the driver's seat, not you.
- **Respect the skip.** If they opt out, opt out cleanly. No guilt-tripping prompts.
- **Carry the contract.** The five answers are not ceremony — they are constraints. Use them.
