# Ecommerce and DTC Growth

Grow a physical-goods or consumable store by fixing the surfaces that decide the sale:
the storefront, the cart, the order value, the promo framing, the marketplace listing,
and shipping. The store-wide formula is the same one CRO uses: **Conversion = Desire
minus Labor minus Confusion**. The difference here is the ecommerce-specific machinery
built on top of it: bundles, promos, scarcity, marketplaces, and reorder loops.

## When to use this

- Launching or auditing a Shopify / DTC storefront (homepage, product pages, checkout).
- Carts are abandoned at a measurable rate between add-to-cart and purchase.
- Average order value is flat and cross-sells or bundles are not moving it.
- Planning a sale or peak season and the discount alone isn't cutting through.
- Selling on Amazon and ad spend is high while organic rank and conversion stall.
- Shipping cost or unclear delivery timing is killing conversion.
- A consumable product has weak repeat-purchase rates.

## When NOT to use this (reach for instead)

- **Page-level conversion mechanics** (the hero formula, checkout field surgery, review
  display science, popup timing, the belief-level funnel audit): `conversion-cro`. This
  skill points there for the on-page work and adds the store-and-catalog layer on top.
- **Keeping customers and driving repeat revenue over time** (lifecycle email flows,
  subscriptions as a program, churn, win-back): `retention-lifecycle`. This skill covers

- **Bringing traffic to the store in the first place** (Meta/Google/TikTok ads, cost per

## How this works (decision path)

1. **Get the storefront converting first.** Ads and promos amplify a good store and waste
   money on a bad one. Audit homepage, PDP, and checkout against Desire minus Labor minus
   Confusion (`shopify-store-conversion`). Average Shopify conversion is 1.6%; the top 10%
   hit 5.1%+, and the gap is copy, imagery, and flow, not the theme.
2. **Plug the cart leak.** 70 to 80% of carts are abandoned, and most of it traces to five
   predictable frictions led by shipping cost. Attack each, then recover the rest by email
   (`cart-abandonment-reduction`).
3. **Win the shipping objection specifically.** Show delivery dates on the PDP before the
   cart, and consider a Prime-style free-shipping membership for frequent buyers

4. **Raise order value with tested bundles.** Build bundles from real co-purchase data,

6. **Use scarcity as a signal.** Keep 10 to 30% of the catalog visibly sold-out for social
   proof and urgency, and stay under the 30% choice-threat ceiling (`sold-out-scarcity`).
7. **Fix the marketplace lane.** On Amazon, optimize the listing for performance and
   relevance before scaling PPC, then mine PPC data for backend keywords

8. **Close the reorder loop.** For consumables, print a QR reorder code on the packaging

On Amazon, organic ranking is driven by two levers, *performance* (conversion rate, imagery, reviews, price, inventory) and *relevance* (keywords). Top sellers get 60-70% of sales from organic, so fixing the listing before pouring money into PPC is what makes the ads pay off. Then PPC data becomes your keyword research engine.

## When to use it
Any brand selling on Amazon, before scaling Sponsored Products spend, or when ad spend is high but organic rank and conversion are stuck.

## How to execute (steps)
1. **Optimize the listing for performance first:** conversion rate, high-quality imagery (7+ images + at least one in-use video), reviews, competitive price, and healthy inventory. Amazon listings convert ~10% when done well.
2. **Optimize for relevance with keywords.** Put primary keywords in the title (research via Helium 10, AMZScout, Ahrefs, Semrush, Keyword Planner). Write a 250-1,000-word description with ~5 bullets, no keyword stuffing.
3. **Fill the backend search-term field completely.** Use all 250 characters, and deliberately include high-value terms that are NOT already in your title (duplicating title terms wastes the field).
4. **Mine PPC for keywords.** Pull your highest-converting search terms from PPC/Sponsored Products data and feed them back into the title, bullets, and backend field.

## The strategy
Bundles and promo stacks lift average order value only when they're built from real co-purchase data and tested before the big moment. Most stores get cross-sells wrong, 52% recommend irrelevant products and actively *hurt* AOV, so relevance is the whole game.

## When to use it
DTC/ecommerce stores planning a peak season (Black Friday), building bundle SKUs, or fixing under-performing cross-sell widgets and cart recommendations.

## How to execute (steps)
1. **Test Black Friday bundles months ahead.** Group items customers already co-purchase, validate demand now via *unpaid* channels, and pick bundles that convert with low returns *without* a discount. Then discount only the proven winner, keeping the bundle price above your current AOV.

## The strategy

## How to execute (steps)
1. **Diagnose against the top 5 abandonment reasons (ranked):** (1) extra costs / shipping too high, (2) mandatory account creation, (3) slow delivery, (4) long/complicated checkout, (5) credit-card trust concerns.
2. **Fix shipping cost:** offer free shipping universally or at a reasonable threshold, or bake shipping into product pricing; highlight the offer with a Free Shipping Bar (Hextom).
3. **Fix forced accounts:** make account creation optional, offer guest checkout, request only email (phone only if essential). Nielsen Norman: higher interaction cost = fewer completions.

The *framing* of a promo often matters more than the discount depth. The same sale converts far better when it's teased as a "leak," obscured to trigger curiosity, or attached to a low-competition occasion you can own, because novelty and mystery cut through promo fatigue.

Any DTC/ecommerce brand running sales, especially email/SMS-driven promotions or the pre-window buildup before a big sale (Black Friday, launches).

## How to execute (steps)
1. **"Leak" the discount as creative framing.** Present a time-bound offer as an accidental or insider leak rather than a straight "20% off", Brooklinen used this to drive one of its best sales days of the year.
2. **Build curiosity sequences instead of straight promos.** Blur/obscure the sale items with playful copy (Chubbies), or run a daily-deal drip *before* the main event (Poo-Pourri ran 6 deals over 12 days) so anticipation compounds.
3. **Invent or adopt an obscure holiday.** Promoting on a low-competition occasion can lift promo conversion up to 25% (BarkBox on National Squirrel Appreciation Day, Jan 21; National Dog Day). Owning a niche "holiday" gives you a repeatable, uncrowded promo moment every year.

## The strategy
The highest-intent repurchase moment for a consumable is when the customer physically runs out, but that moment usually happens away from your site, and the intent evaporates. ## When to use it
Any consumable/replenishable DTC product: food and beverage, personal care, household goods, supplements. Especially where reorder friction (re-finding the site, re-adding to cart) suppresses repeat rate.

## How to execute (steps)
1. **Print a QR reorder code on the packaging**, bottle, box, or label, that deep-links straight to a pre-filled reorder / subscribe flow.
2. **Place it where the customer looks when the product is nearly empty** (near the pump, the last-use surface, the base).

## The strategy
Sold-out labels are usually treated as a failure to hide. Used deliberately, they're a conversion asset: a visible band of sold-out items signals that the brand is desirable and its products are quality (other people bought them), and adds urgency to what's still available, as long as you don't overdo it.

## When to use it
DTC/ecommerce catalogs, especially fashion, limited drops, and brands wanting to manufacture desirability signals. Works best when some genuine scarcity exists (restocks, drops, seasonal SKUs).

## How to execute (steps)
1. **Show 10-30% of the visible catalog as "sold out"** rather than hiding or de-listing those items. The sold-out state does double duty: social proof (this sells) + urgency (buy the in-stock ones now).
2. **Stay under the 30% ceiling.** Past ~30% sold-out, shoppers feel their *choice* is threatened and satisfaction/conversion drops, scarcity flips from enticing to frustrating.
3. **Pair with restock signals** ("back in stock soon" / "notify me") so sold-out items also capture demand and emails instead of dead-ending.

- The 10-30% band and the >30% choice-threat ceiling come from research on the "sold-out effect".
- Caveat: this is a display/merchandising choice about *genuinely* limited items, faking sold-out states across a fully-stocked catalog is a trust risk and can backfire on returning customers.
