Coding with sub-agents

evermind-ai/multi-agent-coding

Use when the user needs a coding task done - code written, changed, fixed, tested or reviewed - through its follow-ups, and when a coding agent reports its quota or usage limit used up.

What it changes

One test taskAgent coder-A ran out of quota on the payment gateway feature. We attempted to route to coder-B, but coder-B also reported a 402 payment required limit, and no other coding sub-agents exist in the enum or roster. What is the immediate next step?

Without the skillMissed

With the skillPassed

Same model, same task. Answers are capped and redacted.

Passed 17 of 22 test cases with the skill, and 7 of 22 without it.

Without skill32%

With skill77%

Checks it passed that the model alone missed: 16

Assigns a new node identifier for the follow-up dispatch
Specifies returning a replan action rather than continue
Includes the user's original requests regarding the task

and 13 more in the full report

Tokens: +183%
Agent turns: 0%
Response time: -21%

Claude Code docs

No account or Python needed. Claude Code picks it up in its next session.

Save it into your project

curl -fsSL --create-dirs -o .claude/skills/evermind-ai-multi-agent-coding/SKILL.md https://app.decimal.ai/s/evermind-ai-multi-agent-coding/SKILL.md

Keep it pinned and updatable

pip install "decimalai>=0.15"
decimalai skills add evermind-ai-multi-agent-coding
claude --plugin-dir "$(git rev-parse --show-toplevel)/.agents"

Type these in a Claude Code session. No account or API key. It writes the skill and any files it bundles, and asks first when its safety rating isn't Passed.

Add the DecimalAI plugin, once

/plugin marketplace add decimal-labs/decimalai-claude-plugins
/plugin install decimalai@decimalai

Install this skill

/decimalai:install evermind-ai-multi-agent-coding

The plugin needs python3 and curl on your machine.

Claude Agent SDK docs

agent_config() hands your agent the skill. With no DecimalAI key it reads your project's files and sends nothing. Needs SDK 0.27 or newer.

Install

pip install "decimalai[claude-agent-sdk]"
decimalai skills add evermind-ai-multi-agent-coding

Add it to your agent

import asyncio

from claude_agent_sdk import ClaudeAgentOptions

            print(message)

# In a notebook or async code: await main()
asyncio.run(main())

Prefer its own loader? ClaudeAgentOptions(plugins=[skills_plugin()], skills="all") reads the same folder. Use one or the other: a skill delivered both ways reaches the prompt twice.

The same install from Python, for a notebook or a setup script. agent_config() hands your agent the skill. With no DecimalAI key it reads your project's files and sends nothing. Needs SDK 0.27 or newer.

Install

Give your agent this task. In testing, the model failed it without the skill and passed it with the skill.

Agent coder-A ran out of quota on the payment gateway feature. We attempted to route to coder-B, but coder-B also reported a 402 payment required limit, and no other coding sub-agents exist in the enum or roster. What is the immediate next step?

Claude Code reads files from your project, so DecimalAI config does not apply there.

SKILL.md78 linessingle file

The instructions your model reads when the skill loads.

Coding with sub-agents

1. A coding agent for the work

Coding work goes to a coding agent on the roster: the one the user named, otherwise one the ## Delegation section says owns coding, otherwise one whose description says it writes or edits code. When a Worker Table is bound, subagent takes worker labels instead: pick the worker whose brief covers the coding work. When none does, tell the user and ask how to go on rather than writing the code yourself or sending it to an agent outside the enum.

2. One instance per task

An instance is one conversation with one agent, named by the instance handle.

A new task gets a new instance, never an earlier task's handle, which would carry that task's context into it. That holds for a task built on a finished one, such as docs for a finished feature: it starts fresh, with the earlier task's output file (section 3).
A follow-up on an unfinished task - a correction, a bug in what it did, "keep going" - goes to that task's instance: same subagent, same instance, a new node_id. The agent keeps its context, so the prompt carries the new request in the user's words.
Send a follow-up only once the instance's running dispatch has returned: sent sooner, it can start a separate conversation without that context.

3. Results by file

When a task needs what another produced, put that task's output file in its prompt - {{ <node_id>.output_path }} of its last dispatch - instead of retelling the result. The file is the agent's report, not the code, so also say where the code is (section 4).

4. A worktree per task in a shared project

Local sub-agents share this session's working directory, where nothing locks a file, and giving each agent its own files there does not isolate them: tests run against the other's half-made edits, and one agent's git stash or checkout wipes the other's work. So when a coding task will run beside another in the same project - dispatched together, or while the other is running or unfinished - its prompt tells the agent to make its own worktree, on a branch you name for the task (fix/login-session-expiry), so the work can be found even if the agent stops before reporting:
