push-to-forked-pr

hoangsonww/push-to-forked-pr

Push the current working tree directly to a GitHub PR whose head lives on a **fork**, without creating a new branch and without pushing to `origin` (which is usually the upstream).

What it changes

One test taskI am updating PR #155. When running `gh pr view 155 --json headRepository`, the nameWithOwner is `our-org/our-repo`, which is identical to the upstream repository. Do I still need to create a dedicated fork remote and push to an external destination?

Without the skillMissed

With the skillPassed

Same model, same task. Answers are capped and redacted.

Passed 17 of 22 test cases with the skill, and 12 of 22 without it.

Without skill55%

With skill77%

Checks it passed that the model alone missed: 6

The response halts or aborts because the pull request is not in OPEN state.
The response uses a temporary remote name patterned like pr123-fork or pr<N>-fork.
The response instructs to push directly to origin using the refspec HEAD:headRefName.

Claude Code docs

No account or Python needed. Claude Code picks it up in its next session.

Save it into your project

curl -fsSL --create-dirs -o .claude/skills/hoangsonww-push-to-forked-pr/SKILL.md https://app.decimal.ai/s/hoangsonww-push-to-forked-pr/SKILL.md

Keep it pinned and updatable

pip install "decimalai>=0.15"
decimalai skills add hoangsonww-push-to-forked-pr
claude --plugin-dir "$(git rev-parse --show-toplevel)/.agents"

Type these in a Claude Code session. No account or API key. It writes the skill and any files it bundles, and asks first when its safety rating isn't Passed.

Add the DecimalAI plugin, once

/plugin marketplace add decimal-labs/decimalai-claude-plugins
/plugin install decimalai@decimalai

Install this skill

/decimalai:install hoangsonww-push-to-forked-pr

The plugin needs python3 and curl on your machine.

Claude Agent SDK docs

agent_config() hands your agent the skill. With no DecimalAI key it reads your project's files and sends nothing. Needs SDK 0.27 or newer.

Install

pip install "decimalai[claude-agent-sdk]"
decimalai skills add hoangsonww-push-to-forked-pr

Add it to your agent

# In a notebook or async code: await main()

Prefer its own loader? ClaudeAgentOptions(plugins=[skills_plugin()], skills="all") reads the same folder. Use one or the other: a skill delivered both ways reaches the prompt twice.

The same install from Python, for a notebook or a setup script. agent_config() hands your agent the skill. With no DecimalAI key it reads your project's files and sends nothing. Needs SDK 0.27 or newer.

No DecimalAI package. The whole skill goes in every prompt, and nothing pins or updates it.

Other setups docs

Fetch the file and give its text to your model as instructions. No account or package needed.

Get the file

curl -fsSL https://app.decimal.ai/s/hoangsonww-push-to-forked-pr/SKILL.md

Read the summary as JSON

curl -fsSL https://app.decimal.ai/s/hoangsonww-push-to-forked-pr.json

Now try it

Give your agent this task. In testing, the model failed it without the skill and passed it with the skill.

I am updating PR #155. When running `gh pr view 155 --json headRepository`, the nameWithOwner is `our-org/our-repo`, which is identical to the upstream repository. Do I still need to create a dedicated fork remote and push to an external destination?

What to look for

The response instructs to push directly to origin using the refspec HEAD:headRefName.

Manage it in DecimalAI

Optional, not a framework

Saved prompts and skills, pinned versions, and traces of this skill in your runs. DecimalAI does not run your agent.

Claude Code reads files from your project, so DecimalAI config does not apply there.

On Claude Agent SDK: save the skill to an agent here, set DECIMAL_API_KEY, and the same code uses it with no command to run. Changes you save reach the next run with no redeploy.

On OpenAI Agents: save the skill to an agent here, set DECIMAL_API_KEY, and the same code uses it with no command to run. Changes you save reach the next run with no redeploy.

On OpenAI SDK: save the skill to an agent here, set DECIMAL_API_KEY, and the same code uses it with no command to run. Changes you save reach the next run with no redeploy.

The instructions your model reads when the skill loads.

push-to-forked-pr

The whole point of this skill: origin is usually the upstream, but the PR's head is on someone else's fork. Pushing to origin updates the upstream's branch, not the PR. You have to push to the fork.

GitHub allows this in two situations:

You are the fork owner — straightforward, you own that branch.
You are an upstream maintainer and the PR has maintainerCanModify: true (the "Allow edits from maintainers" checkbox the PR author leaves on by default). GitHub then lets the upstream's auth push to the fork branch.

If neither holds, abort and tell the user only the fork owner can push.

Procedure

1. Read the PR's head metadata

PR_NUMBER=<N>
gh pr view "$PR_NUMBER" --json state, headRefName, headRefOid,headRepository, headRepositoryOwner, maintainerCanModify, url

Capture:

state — bail if not "OPEN".
headRepository.nameWithOwner → the fork (e.g. someone/Repo).
headRepositoryOwner.login → the fork owner.
headRefName → the branch on the fork (usually matches local).
headRefOid → the PR's current head SHA. Your local HEAD must be a descendant.
maintainerCanModify → must be true if you are not the fork owner.

If headRepository.nameWithOwner matches the upstream's nameWithOwner, this PR is internal:

HEAD_BRANCH=$(gh pr view "$PR_NUMBER" --json headRefName --jq .headRefName)
HEAD_REF_OID=$(gh pr view "$PR_NUMBER" --json headRefOid --jq .headRefOid)
git merge-base --is-ancestor "$HEAD_REF_OID" HEAD && echo ok || echo NOT-DESCENDANT   # abort if NOT-DESCENDANT
git push origin "HEAD:${HEAD_BRANCH}"
