Topic Selection for an ARSoc Review (arsoc-topic-selection)

When to trigger

• You have a candidate sociology literature and need to know if it is "ARSoc-shaped"
• A topic feels either too narrow (a single-study debate) or too sprawling (a whole field)
• You are deciding between ARSoc and a sibling outlet (ASR/AJS empirical paper, Sociological Theory, a handbook chapter)
• The literature is young/fast-moving and you suspect it is not yet ready for an annual-volume review

What ARSoc is for

ARSoc is the Annual Reviews sociology survey series: a yearly volume of invited, authoritative review articles that are accessible to sociologists outside the subfield, not only to its specialists. The reader is a competent sociologist — a culture scholar reading the networks review, a demographer reading the race/ethnicity review — who wants to enter, teach, or locate the open questions of an area they do not currently work in. That cross-subfield reader profile, plus the annual-volume cadence, sets the fit bar. ARSoc covers the breadth of the discipline: stratification, culture, organizations, networks, race/ethnicity, gender, family, demography, political and economic sociology, and more.

The four ARSoc-fit tests

A literature belongs in ARSoc when it passes all four. If it fails one, route accordingly.

1. Maturity. There is a body of research — multiple research lines, accumulated evidence, recognizable theoretical debates — not a handful of recent papers. A subfield still being born produces a premature review that dates within a volume cycle. (Fails → too young; wait.)
2. Broad importance. The questions matter to sociologists generally, not only to a dozen specialists. ARSoc serves the whole discipline; a review only its own subfield could love is a specialist-journal review, not an ARSoc article. (Fails → too niche.)
3. Need for synthesis. A newcomer cannot currently get oriented without a guide, and existing entry points (a recent ARSoc review, a handbook chapter) have not already done the job — a too-recent prior ARSoc review on the same area is a hard barrier. The value is the map, not the list. (Fails → already synthesized.)
4. Tractable for the ARSoc envelope. ARSoc reviews are substantial but bounded; Annual Reviews does not publish a fixed public word limit, so length is set per commissioned article — confirm with your editor (待核实, do not assume a number). One author/team must read and weigh the literature within that envelope. (Fails → carve a coherent axis, or it is a handbook chapter.)

Framing the animating question

An ARSoc review is organized by a question about the subfield, not by a topic label. Before approaching the Committee, write one sentence of each:

• State-of-knowledge question: "What do we now know about X, and how confident should we be?"
• Why now: what makes a synthesis valuable for this volume — a wave of new evidence, a methodological turn (e.g. computational/administrative-data methods), a policy or public debate, convergence or fracture of findings.
• Reader payoff: what a sociologist from an adjacent subfield can do after reading (enter the area, teach it, locate the open questions and the forward agenda).

Checklist

• ] The subfield passes all four fit tests (maturity, broad importance, need, envelope-tractability)
• ] The animating question about the subfield is written in one sentence
• ] The "why now" is concrete (new evidence / method turn / public-policy salience), not "no one has reviewed this"
• ] The intended reader is the cross-subfield sociologist, and the payoff is stated

• ] You are not the subfield's only contributor — the review will not become a self-retrospective

Anti-patterns

• "No one has reviewed X" used as the sole justification — absence is not importance
• Reviewing your own research program under a neutral subfield title (self-promotion; ARSoc punishes this)
• Picking an area so new the review freezes a moving target before the volume prints
• A scope so broad it becomes a handbook chapter; so narrow it is a specialist-journal review
• Confusing "topic" (a label like "social networks") with "animating question" (what the review argues about the area)
• Planning to submit cold — ARSoc does not take unsolicited manuscripts (see arsoc-proposal-and-commissioning)
