p5 Paint Animation

heygen-com/p5-paint-animation

Turn a text prompt, a photo, or a live video clip into hand-made-looking p5.js animation — pencil handwriting that writes itself, photos repainted as brushstroke art with paint-on animation and camera moves, and short videos (iPhone Live Photos included) repainted frame-by-frame as a living painting.

What it changes

One test taskI want to produce an animated write-on text clip of the question 'Where next?' using a dark charcoal stroke at a large font scale of 200 on default lined paper. Provide the complete render-anim.mjs invocation.

Your framework

Claude Code docs

No account or Python needed. Claude Code picks it up in its next session.

Save it into your project

curl -fsSL --create-dirs -o .claude/skills/heygen-com-p5-paint-animation/SKILL.md https://app.decimal.ai/s/heygen-com-p5-paint-animation/SKILL.md

Keep it pinned and updatable

pip install "decimalai>=0.15"
decimalai skills add heygen-com-p5-paint-animation
claude --plugin-dir "$(git rev-parse --show-toplevel)/.agents"

This gets SKILL.md only. The skill's 8 other files are not included. The other two ways bring them.

Type these in a Claude Code session. No account or API key. It writes the skill and any files it bundles, and asks first when its safety rating isn't Passed.

Add the DecimalAI plugin, once

/plugin marketplace add decimal-labs/decimalai-claude-plugins
/plugin install decimalai@decimalai

Install this skill

/decimalai:install heygen-com-p5-paint-animation

The plugin needs python3 and curl on your machine.

No tools at all. Claude Code picks it up in its next session.

Copy SKILL.md

Save it in your project, as

Claude Agent SDK docs

agent_config() hands your agent the skill. With no DecimalAI key it reads your project's files and sends nothing. Needs SDK 0.27 or newer.

Install

pip install "decimalai[claude-agent-sdk]"
decimalai skills add heygen-com-p5-paint-animation

Add it to your agent

import asyncio

# In a notebook or async code: await main()

Prefer its own loader? ClaudeAgentOptions(plugins=[skills_plugin()], skills="all") reads the same folder. Use one or the other: a skill delivered both ways reaches the prompt twice.

The same install from Python, for a notebook or a setup script. agent_config() hands your agent the skill. With no DecimalAI key it reads your project's files and sends nothing. Needs SDK 0.27 or newer.

This gets SKILL.md only. The skill's 8 other files are not included.

Now try it

Give your agent this task. In testing, the model failed it without the skill and passed it with the skill.

I want to produce an animated write-on text clip of the question 'Where next?' using a dark charcoal stroke at a large font scale of 200 on default lined paper. Provide the complete render-anim.mjs invocation.

p5 Paint Animation

Three flows, one engine. Pick by input:

Input	Flow	Output
Text prompt / phrase	A: Write-on	Handwriting animates onto ruled paper, pen-tracked for camera
Photo	B: Repaint + paint-on	Brushstroke painting, still or painting-itself film, camera pull
Video / Live Photo	C: Living painting	Every frame repainted over a locked stroke lattice

When to use / when not

Use for: hand-made-looking motion — handwriting that writes itself, photos as brushstroke paintings (still or animating), short clips as living paintings. Do NOT use for: crisp typography or brand-accurate text (use real fonts), photoreal output, footage longer than ~10s (render cost scales per frame ≈ 5–20s each), or live/interactive pages (this renders offline MP4/PNG).

Requirements and side effects

Requires: Node 22.12+, ffmpeg on PATH, ~500MB disk (Chromium).
sh scripts/setup.sh (run manually, once) uses the committed lockfile to download pinned dependencies from the npm registry: puppeteer 25.9.0, p5 2.3.2 (LGPL-2.1), and p5.brush 2.2.1 (MIT). Puppeteer downloads its pinned Chrome for Testing build from Google's download service. Read-only downloads; no credentials, no cost, nothing uploaded.
Renders launch sandboxed headless Chromium on a blank page. Network and local file requests from sketches are blocked; sketches receive inputs as data URLs.
Writes only inside paths you pass (out.png / out.mp4, plus a sibling .track.json and, with --keep-frames 1, a _frames_* directory).
Optional, only for flow C subject matting: npx hyperframes remove-background (downloads the HyperFrames CLI from npm; local CoreML inference, no data leaves the machine).

Verify success

Render any command below, then open the output: the last frame must show the complete artwork (text fully written / painting fully covered), and re-running with the same --seed must produce identical bytes on the canvas. The smoke
